Bring A Light

by Brent on January 2, 2009

in Adventures of the Author

Recently I wrote about my quest for an authentic Christmas, one free of unnecessary commerce and consumption, one that was more giving, more thoughtful and well…more spiritual.

I also alluded to a belief of mine that offering realistic alternatives to the problems of society is more effective than mere protest. Especially angry, bitter protest.

Or as my friend John O. likes to tell me, “There’s no point in cursing the darkness for being dark if you’re not willing to bring a little light.”

So in this spirit, the Comma clan went to spend Christmas Eve with our people at Lifelink Memphis.

Now I’m not saying that my family singlehandedly brought illumination to the darkened carcass of Christmas present…

But you should have seen my truck.

When I first moved to Memphis I realized right away that locals and motor vehicles shouldn’t be allowed to mix.

Even under the best of conditions they form unstable compounds, traveling in erratic, unpredictable trajectories which, in some unexplained quantum-mechanical fashion, are able to occupy all possibly lanes of traffic simultaneously, at least until interacting violently with similar neighboring compounds.

The only know method of intensifying this chaotic reaction is to add precipitation…

Save Your Christmas

by Brent on December 13, 2008

in Most Joking Aside

This time of year, it is not unusual to hear from crowds of Christians bemoaning the current state of Christmas and how secular, and selfish, and generally Christ-deficient it has become.

It is also not unusual to view these people as whiners and spoilsports, out to ruin the fun for everyone else who doesn’t believe exactly as they do.

A perception that is substantially aided by the tone with which they present their case.

Which is generally whiny and obnoxious…

This is it. The first post of a new year.

At this auspicious juncture, many writers would take the opportunity to look back over the recently expired year and reflect on personal accomplishments, world events, or even sizable bowel movements.

But many writers don’t run this site.

Although several have been known to gaze with desire upon its fearsome might, none have succeeded in wresting the reigns of powers from my adjective-infused grasp…
